Personal Philosophy For Using Technology In Education
In recent times, technological advancement has grown exponentially not only in the business world but also in the field of education. It therefore becomes imperative that teachers equip themselves with the technology so as to adapt modern ways of sharing and imparting knowledge to their students.
As a teacher, my personal philosophy for using technology in education is that I should advance myself with new innovations in the classroom since our students nowadays are extremely technologically savvy and undoubtedly will be more inclined to perform or participate in class activities if technology is included as an instructional aid. Since, I am in a profession that requires constant adaptation, which may require more integration of technological devices in lessons, it is essential that we cater to the learning needs of our students and more and more technology has become a great learning tool. Schools should be a reflection of our society; this requires educators to be knowledgeable of current trends and issues in our world. Therefore the use of technology in education has several benefits to the classroom as well as the students. These benefits are highlighted below:
o The use of technological devices helps to enhance learning, as it may influence how students learn, depending on his/her learning ability.
o Technology helps to make lessons fun and interactive, for example a teacher may use Digital Story, in his/her story telling period to help students utilize their imagination.
o It is a great way of doing presentations, such as Power point.
o It helps to ease the pressure off the teachers, where they could keep a database to monitor students’ performance and means of assessment.
o Students are better able to memorize facts faster.
The role of a teacher is to serve as a guide for learning, encourage individual growth in students, and always use numerous types of assessments beyond objective tests to monitor the individual progress of students. Thus with the use of technology, benefits can be emerged when integrated into project-based curricular activities in which students are gatherers of information, problem solvers, and communicators of information.
On the other hand, by using technology, students should demonstrate what they have learnt. Students must be monitored with the technology as though it has many advantages, this tool can also be a channel of distraction and destruction. Therefore, teachers must plan lessons carefully with the technology by using different resources provided; and be watchful and ensure that students are active participants in scheduled class activities so that they will develop appropriate skills and self-direction to become life-long learners. Consequently, I believe that technology will only become an effective means of learning if used properly.
